The Training Program
To prepare graduates for the changing world of medicine in which they will practice, the training program provides:
- A full spectrum of patients and medical problems with an emphasis on "hands on" training where residents are responsible for the direct management of their patients.
- In-depth experience in intensive care including Critical Care Units, Cardiac Care Units and Emergency Room.
- On-going experiences in primary care, which include a weekly hospital-based primary care practice where the residents follow their own patients, as well as a weekly community-based preceptorship in the offices of full-time faculty, private physicians, university health services, HIV clinics and/or community health clinics.
The Program Director, in conjunction with five Associate Program Directors, is responsible for the curriculum and operations of the program.
Two Tracks
- Categorical Medicine: A fully
accredited three year program leading to board eligiblity in Medicine.
After three years of training, residents are fully prepared for any
career in medicine they choose: general internal medicine (primary care,
clinician educator or hospitalist) or medical subspecialty .
- Preliminary Program: A one year experience designed to form a solid foundation in clinical internal medicine for those entering other specialties. When possible, individualized programs may be arranged to fulfill specific needs or interests (e.g. residents entering ophthalmology may spend extra time in neurology). All preliminary interns have six weeks of elective time.
